A Day in the Life of Fitness Trainers

Day in the Life of Fitness Trainers

If you’d love to work in health and fitness, are passionate about exercise, like working with people and have the ability to motivate others then a role as a Fitness Trainer could be just your ticket.

What does a Fitness Trainer actually do?

Fitness Trainers also referred to as Fitness Instructors or Gym Instructors advise members typically in a gym, health club or leisure centre on the right exercise plan for them, based on their level of fitness, experience and personal goals. They work with a wide range of people from many differing fitness backgrounds and demographics.

Typically gyms operate from 6am to 10pm and many open 7 days a week. Full time Fitness Instructors work a range of shifts and part-time Instructors often enjoy the flexibility from working evenings, weekends or half days.

Many people choose to become Fitness Trainers on a part-time basis to supplement existing study, work or family commitments. Others are seeking an entry point into the fitness industry and use this as a stepping stone going on to progress to more experienced roles later on by qualifying as a Personal Trainer.

A typical day involves:

1 – Demonstrating to gym members the correct way to use exercise equipment
2 – Monitoring and maintaining gym equipment to the highest standards
3 – Being health and safety conscious, ensuring the gym is a safe and clean environment for members
4 – Completing new member inductions, designing bespoke exercise plans and exercise programmes
5 – Conducting existing member exercise programme reviews
6 – Supervising the gym floor, engaging with gym members and building effective relationships supporting membership retention

We are seeing increasing demand from gyms for newly qualified Fitness Instructors and from this initial role there are many exciting options to progress and build your career. These include specialising in a specific area such as kid’s fitness, cardiac rehab or nutrition as well as commencing personal training courses.

If your thinking of starting a career in fitness we hope this blog has given you insight into just one of many exciting career options. Like to find out more?  We’re always happy to talk.
